Students of the Counseling - School Counseling program from Villanova University learn to collaborate with parents, teachers and administrators to advocate for youth regarding issues such as domestic abuse, poverty, grief, discrimination and family concerns.
What you'll learn
Students are prepared for the school counseling profession through training in courses such as counseling theory, group dynamics, counseling skills, multi-cultural counseling, consultation, English language learners, special education, and school counseling orientation. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop their counseling skills within the school setting through a pre-practicum, practicum and internship experiences. Full-time students will be in schools starting in their first semester.
The School Counseling program was created by faculty members in accord with the certification requirements of the State of Pennsylvania and is accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Coursework is based on the standards of: CACREP, the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model for School Counseling Programs and National Standards for School Counseling programs, Ethical Standards for School Counselors developed by ASCA, certification requirements for school counselors as outlined by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Education, and the Pennsylvania Standards for School Counseling Programs.
The concentration in School Counseling leads to approval for Pre-K to 12 certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Students seeking certification to work in Pennsylvania must complete all requirements for a Master's of Science degree in Counseling with concentration in School Counseling.
