Key Features
In the first year of foundation studies students attend courses in cinematography, screen writing, film-making, and direction. Compulsory interdisciplinary seminars include: Film Theory and History, Employment Law Regulations, Basics of Film Production, and Sequence Analysis. The Film and Media programme at Filmacademy Baden-Württemberg involves the production and completion of entire film productions within inter-departmental teams.
The 2nd year consists of an entire semester within the chosen specialization, e.g. Directing (feature, documentary or promotional film), and a semester in one of the compulsory elective modules – screen-writing, cinematography, montage/editing, film making, or animation. Film presentations take place at the end of the semester. Students must also attend compulsory interdisciplinary seminars on film history and theory.
Project-based study in the 3rd and 4th years of studies include the following fields of study: Animation, Cinematography, Documentary film, Screen-writing, TV journalism, Interactive Media, Editing, Motion Design, Production Design, Feature Films and Promotional film. After the third year film production, a diploma film is to be presented in the corresponding diploma semester at the end of the 4th year of studies. In the 3rd year of study Students must complete a written film analysis.
Programme Structure
- In the foundation courses, the Film Academy’s range of programmes and academic conditions are presented. This includes an introduction to the technology available, the organisation of projects, and basic communication strategies and fundamental content.
- The project-based study (3rd and 4th years) includes the following fields of study: animation, image composition/camera, documentary films, screenplays, TV journalism, interactive media, editing, motion design, production design, scenic films, and promotional films.
- After the third year film, the diploma film is shown at the end of the 4th year of study. Teaching and supervision take place in the departments named above. Students must write a film analysis in the 3rd year of study.

- Evidence of general/subject-linked university entrance qualification and, if applicable, of a pre-diploma, diploma, Bachelor or Master degree (officially certified)

- Motivation letter explaining your interest in the chosen field of study (max. 1 A4 page)
- Evidence of a satisfactory command of German (Basic Knowledge II) DSH, Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang
- Foreign applicants (m/f/x) who have a foreign school-leaving certificate (A Level) must present this certificate to the following institution to establish equivalence with the German school-leaving qualification (Abitur) before submitting their application to the Filmakademie:
- Any work experience relating to the programme of study applied for must be carried out at production companies, TV stations, distribution companies, publishing houses, or media companies.
