Overview
Students will examine the impact of globalisation on sources and subjects of international law. Additional areas of study include recent developments in the areas of international economic law, environmental protection, and governmental responsibility, as well as pertinent issues that, in recent years, have confronted international society.
Emphasis is placed upon subjects relating to the regulation of international trade, as well as investment law and the settlement of international disputes. Within these paramters, particular attention will be focused upon subjects such as international arbitration and procedures brought before the World Trade Organization and the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

Following successful completion of the International Law programme from Heidelberg University, graduates will have the ability to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of the sources of international law, the way in which these sources originate, the interrelationship between the various sources, and the ways in which these sources are utilised by international lawyers
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic principles of international law
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of how international legal principles are implemented into, and interact with, domestic law
- Engage in theoretical discussion of the basic principles of international law, with special emphasis on international commercial law, international investment law, and international arbitration, and apply these principles to specific cases.

- Certificate of the undergraduate degree programme
- Certificate of enrolment from the most-recently attended university.
- Proof of previous achievements in the Master's degree programme
- Students applying for a transfer or change of institution from a non-German university must also submit: a certificate of transferable grades from the relevant subject area
- Statement of sufficient financing for completion of the course of study. This does not apply for applications from EU/EEA member states and applicants with a German university entrance qualification.
- Uncertified copy of the applicant’s passport (page with name in Latin script). Applicants from EU/EEA member states may alternatively submit a copy of their personal identity card.
- For applicants with certificates from Vietnam, the People's Republic of China and India: Original of the APS certificate from the relevant Academic Examination Body.
