Overview
The programme covers urgent water issues such as water in relation to health, climate or food and offers different disciplinary perspectives from which these issues can be studied. These include management and governance, engineering and digital innovation.
While addressing the latest insights into water and sustainable development for all students, the programme allows individual students to follow a customized study trajectory tailored to their professional ambitions. Some students may opt to deepen their disciplinary knowledge, while others may broaden their knowledge to adjacent water fields relevant to their career. To further multidisciplinary thinking and acting, students with various background will work together on cases in a group.
Coaches support students in building their customized programme and provide study advice throughout the programme.

The curriculum of the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development consists of common parts, thematic track modules and a thesis research part. The contents of the common parts are the same for all students, whereas the thematic track modules and MSc thesis research are part of a customized learning trajectory based on personal learning ambitions.
The thematic track modules are grouped in four closely connected and partly overlapping thematic areas based on societal water challenges:
- Water, Food and Energy
- Water Hazards, Risks and Climate
- Water and Health
- Water Resources and Ecosystem Health
Upon conclusion of the thematic track modules, students start an interdisciplinary group project in which they make an analysis of a water-related problem.
Their studies are concluded with individual thesis research. The thesis research can be done at IHE Delft, at another location in the Netherlands, or -subject to available funding- in the student’s home country.

In the application, students indicate their preference for a thematic track and disciplinary profile, and the application will be assessed with this in mind.
Academic admission to IHE Delft MSc in Water and Sustainable Development may be granted to applicants who provide evidence of having:
- A Bachelor degree in an appropriate field which has been awarded by a university of recognised standing.
- A good command of the English language, if this is not the first language. All non-native English-speaking applicants must satisfy the English language requirements for IHE Delft's educational programmes.
- A strong motivation to successfully complete the programme.
Work experience
Several years of professional experience in a field related to the programme's content is considered to be an asset.
