About

Theory meets practice in this unique Archaeology - Mediterranean Archaeology programme that’s offered jointly by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam.

Overview

In this Archaeology - Mediterranean Archaeology programme from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you’ll benefit from a strong theoretical focus as well as practice-oriented modules in which you’ll interpret field data and study archaeological materials first-hand.

The programme is made up of four core courses (24 EC), three research labs (18 EC), and your Master’s thesis (18 EC)

If you decide to follow the Mediterranean Archaeology track, you’ll focus more on the history of the ancient Mediterranean world – from the Bronze Age until the Early Modern Period.

However, you’ll specialise in Mediterranean Archaeology during the research labs, which are separate for each track. With the explicit aim of developing your knowledge in your chosen area of specialisation, these tutorials are related to research projects by ACASA Archaeology staff members who are experts in Mediterranean Archaeology. Your individual research assignment and Master’s thesis may also be on a topic of your choice within your area of specialisation.

Future

After graduating with a Master’s degree in Archaeology, you’ll not only have in-depth knowledge of archaeology – you’ll also have a range of other academic skills, including research, critical thinking, fieldwork and analytical skills.

Pursue an academic career

Alternatively, you could decide to follow a PhD programme at VU Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, or another university in the Netherlands or abroad. If you decide to pursue an academic career, it’s a good idea to discuss the possibility of switching to a two-year Research Master's programme.
