The Graduate Schools of Biostudies and Medicine offer Global Frontier in Life Science, a new joint educational program for Doctoral and Master’s students as part of K.U. PROFILE -  Kyoto University Programs for Future International Leaders.

Overview

This program, Global Frontier in Life Science, from Kyoto University is held entirely in English, including the entrance examinations, lectures, experiments, and discussions.

International as well as domestic students are welcome. In particular, the School welcomes those who show a respect for life and a desire to create a comprehensive and cutting-edge field beyond existing disciplinary boundaries in life sciences.

Admission requirements

  • Our entrance examination for the Master’s program is held in winter. The guidelines for admission is posted in September on our web site (https://www.lif.kyoto-u.ac.jp/e/). The academic year starts on October 1st or April 1st. Thus, applicants can select the starting date of either October 1st or April 1st in the next year. Applicants to the Master’s program can apply for up to two labs, in which they wish to conduct research. Thus, applicants should familiarize themselves with faculty members’ research interests and must contact lab head(s) to fully discuss prospective research activities and availability before filing the application. 
  • Admission examinations for the Master’s program in “Global Frontier in Life Science” consist of: 1) a documentation screening and 2) an oral examination (interview). Please note that applicants are NOT required to be physically present in Japan for the examination.

General requirements

  • Admission examinations for the Master’s program in “Global Frontier in Life Science” consist of: 1) a document screening and 2) an oral examination (interview).
  • The entrance exam will comprise achievement tests that include a written exam to evaluate the applicant’s ability to think logically in English, a skill that is required to read and analyze an article published in an international journal; a written exam to assess the applicant’s general knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and other life science fields; a written exam to assess the applicant’s fundamental knowledge as required to pursue his or her intended field of study; and an oral exam to assess the applicant’s judgement, thinking ability, communication skills, initiative, and ethical perspective.
