  • Special Education programs at the The University of Iowa are offered in three areas, depending on the degree a student pursues: K­-8 and 5­-12 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate and K­12 Instructional Strategist II: Behavior Disorder/Learning Disabilities. All teacher licensure and certification programs are approved by the Iowa Department of Education.
  • Applicants may request admission for the purpose of obtaining special education licensure without also completing an M.A. degree.  Students who do not seek licensure may be admitted selectively to the M.A. program.

Programme Structure

  • The M.A. program in special education prepares individuals to deliver appropriate levels of service to students with disabilities at the elementary and secondary levels in either public or private settings. Graduates of this program qualify for positions in public schools, local and state education agencies, clinical settings, and institutions of higher education.  Applicants may request admission for the purpose of obtaining special education licensure without also completing an M.A. degree.  Students who do not seek licensure may be admitted selectively to the M.A. program. All teacher licensure/certification programs are approved by the Iowa Department of Education.

General requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from a Regionally Accredited American College or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions
  • Cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 or better on a four-point scale
  • NOTE: The GRE requirement has been suspended for the 2020-2021 admissions cycle only. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General test (verbal and quantitative) combined score of at least 300 (preferred)
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must score at least 100 (Internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (English Proficiency Requirements)
  • Experience and/or teaching licensure/certification
  • An interview may be requested
