The joint master's programme in Maritime Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is given in collaboration between the Nordic Five Tech universities – KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers, DTU, Aalto University and NTNU – and hereby combines these five universities lead expertise and long tradition in maritime engineering.

The joint master's programme in Maritime Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is a collaboration between the five leading technical universities in the Nordic countries (Nordic Five Tech). The programme gives you a unique opportunity to tailor your degree based on your academic interests.

You will get to study at two of the partner universities, spending one year at each. You graduate with a double master’s degree from the two universities. Nordic Five Tech is a strategic alliance consisting of:

  • Aalto University in Finland
  • Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden
  • Technical University of Denmark
  • KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden
  • Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Careers

The multi-disciplinary character of the subject maritime engineering, and the structure and curriculum of this programme, make the education relevant for careers in the maritime sector as well as in other fields. Within the maritime sector the Nordic countries are leading in a number of fields such as ship operation and design and the construction of high-technology ships, small craft, and offshore installations. Other significant markets are, for example, found in other parts of the EU and in the large shipbuilding nations in Asia.

Academic Requirements

A Bachelor of Science (180 ECTS credits) in Naval Architecture is required. The following alternative degrees might however be considered on an individual basis:

  • BSc in Ocean Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Engineering Physics.
  • BEng in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

The applicant’s qualifications must include a strong working knowledge of mathematics and mechanics fulfilling the following minimum requirements:

  • Mathematics: 25 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations.
  • Statistics and probability theory: 5 ECTS.
  • Statics, mechanical vibrations, and strength of materials: 10-15 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: min. 5 ECTS
