Leiden University’s Master’s in Middle Eastern Studies programme is a one-year, full-time Master’s programme that is taught completely in English. Overview

The Middle Eastern Studies MA programme at Leiden University  can help turn you into an authority on what has been for many years - and will continue to be for the foreseeable future - a region of constant political, ethnic and religious upheaval. 

Learning from renowned, internationally respected academics, you will delve into a wide range of relevant and contemporary topics. These can include the history, cultures and languages of Turkey, Persia and Israel, about Islam and all things Arabic, as well as international relations and the political economy of the Middle East.

The following diploma requirements apply for this programme:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a Dutch research university (in the specialisation):
  • Middle Eastern Studies;
  • A bachelor’s degree in the field of the specialisation of the relevant programme(s) BA Arabic Language and Culture, BA Hebrew Language and Culture, BA Religious Studies with a specialisation Islam Studies provided the student has at least 30 EC of courses on the cultures, histories, literatures, politics, and religions of the Middle East;
  • Completed the pre-Master's / bridging programme.
