About

Focus on developing the cutting-edge skills you require to work in this area of growth in the media industry. Our MA in Data Journalism at the City, University of London is designed to build skills in working with data and communicating the stories that emerge from it in a range of innovative and engaging ways.

Overview

Benefits of this course

  • The MA Data Journalism at the City, University of London has been developed to allow students to develop the skills required to work within specialist teams that are being developed in newsrooms across the country.
  • There’s a strong focus on telling data-driven stories with engaging graphics, working as part of an agile team and using data techniques to investigate key issues.
  • The course offers a mix of technical skills that allow students to investigate, analyse and visualise information as well as the core Journalistic skills of research, storytelling, media law and ethics.
  • Across the course you will build a portfolio of visualisations and journalistic work and develop the problem-solving skills required to work in the agile and developing area of data journalism.

Career

  • Our Journalism MA graduates are highly sought after by some of the best-known news organisations in the UK and beyond.
  • More and more newsrooms have data and development teams and this course has been developed to meet this need. Organizations including the BBC, The Guardian, The Times (London) and The Financial Times are using data-driven journalism skills to find stories and tell them in an engaging way.
  • This course builds on our success with including data journalism skills within the MA interactive Journalism, but with a deeper focus on some of the technical aspects of the data journalist’s role.
  • Students from both courses can go on to be data journalists or use these skills to move into other specialisms of Journalism.
