Overview
The Physics Extra-Faculty master's degree from University of Basel successfully participates in cutting-edge research in important and fascinating areas of physics:
Nano and quantum physics
The revolutionary concepts of quantum physics and their consequences for the smallest to the largest things are researched here at the highest level, be it in super-semiconductors or semiconductors, magnets, graphs, topological systems or ultra-cold gases. New tools of nanophysics are used or developed to open the door to the quantum world. In this area, the fundamentals for key technologies of the future are researched and taught, ranging from quantum computing, quantum optics, and scanning probe microscopes to the life sciences.
The nanoscience in Basel is unique and a leader in Switzerland, also because of the close cooperation of the Department with the Swiss Nano Sciences Institute (SNI) - the national center of excellence in nanoscience and technology.
Cosmology and particle physics
What is the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry without which matter would not have arisen? What is the nature of "dark matter"? How did galaxies, stars and neutron stars come into being?
The cosmology and particle physics explores the subatomic building blocks of matter, its role in the development of the universe and in the formation of stars and supernova explosions.
Career opportunities
The career opportunities - outside of the teaching post at the upper secondary level - depend heavily on which 2nd subject from the Phil.-Hist. Faculty was chosen.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- The Bachelor is the first degree before the Master. It comprises a total of 180 credit points (CP). The non-faculty subject Physics (76 CP) is combined with a second Phil.-Hist. Study subject for also 75 CP and a complementary area (elective area; 30 CP) studied.
Physics can also be studied as an extra-faculty subject (35 CP), including sports science .
- One ECTS credit point corresponds to approximately 30 hours of work.
- The non-faculty subject Physics is offered at Bachelor's and Master’s level in combination with a second subject from the Phil.-Hist. Faculty (see www.philhist.unibas.ch/studium) and a complementary area or as a second subject in sports science.
- Usually physics is combined with another future subject so that the teaching diploma for Matura schools for physics and a school subject such as German, English, history, etc. can be acquired.
