The Computer Science, Informatics (non-faculty master's degree) course at the University of Basel is a natural science course and offers application-oriented, modern computer science training with a sound basic mathematical knowledge.


The Computer Science, Informatics (non-faculty master's degree) course at the University of Basel gives its graduates the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a wide range of professions in business and administration, but also provides the theoretical tools to get started in research. During their studies, students learn to systematically analyze problems and to develop solutions independently using information and communication technologies. Working in a team and presenting IT solutions are central.

Distributed Systems and Machine Intelligence

Computer science research at the University of Basel focuses on two subject areas: Distributed Systems and Machine Intelligence. 

In the Distributed Systems area , the focus is on the design and further development of devices such as programs for high-performance computer networks, the elements of which are located in different places, even on different continents. Researchers in the field of machine intelligence develop and optimize autonomous decision-making systems for planning and predicting future events or states. Both areas are worked on by several research groups and given special attention in teaching.

Career opportunities

Computer scientists work in the private sector and administration as well as in teaching and research. Areas of activity for graduates who study computer science combined with a humanities / cultural studies subject can be found primarily in libraries, publishing houses, museums, archives, information brokerage firms and digital media.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • The master's is the second degree after the bachelor's degree. The master’s program comprises a total of 120 credit points (CP) and two subjects as well as a free elective area. The non-faculty subject Computer Science (35 CP) is the minor (minor subject), and there is also a second Phil.-Hist major (major subject). Subject to 65 CP (including 30 CP Master's thesis) or sports science. The free elective area comprises 20 credits. One ECTS credit point corresponds to approximately 30 hours of work.
  • The non-faculty subject Computer Science is offered at Bachelor's and Master’s level in combination with a second subject from the Phil.-Hist. Faculty (see and a free elective or as a second subject in sports science.
