The North American Studies programme of the University of Bonn focuses on research of the United States of America and Canada and offers an innovative, transdisciplinary space for research on cultural-analytical theories and methods, transatlantic relations, and globalization topics.


The North American Studies programme of the University of Bonn addresses North American literatures and cultures from their colonial beginnings to contemporary literary and cultural practices. Based on the expertise of faculty members and the institutional partnerships, the program concentrates on North American history, politics, and economics. The study program explores questions in particular from the following areas: methodology, modern era, post-modern era, poetry and poetics, gender studies, Afro-American studies, pop cultures and overlaps between culture and economics.

Guest researchers, especially from Canada, visit the University of Bonn regularly and share their knowledge and insights with students.

Possible lines of work:

Cultural management, language institutes (adult education), journalism/media industry, communications industry (public relations, translation), book industry (libraries, booksellers, publishers), international cultural relations, marketing, tourism, international organizations/ public authorities/ governmental or non-governmental organizations, academia (research management, teaching/research at universities, research institutions, university administration, etc.)

General requirements

Your application should include:

  • the application form of the University of Bonn
  • a notarized copy of your B.A. certificate and diploma supplement. If you are still enrolled in a B.A. program at the time of your application, please submit your current transcript of grades
  • a certified copy of your high school diploma
  • a certificate of advanced English language proficiency, documented by results of one of the following tests: TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE. We will waive the language requirement for alumni of B.A. programs in English and American Studies and programs entirely taught in English.
  • a certificate of intermediate German language proficiency (DSH-1, TestDaF TDN 3) if you are an international student. If you opt to take the DSH at the University of Bonn after acceptance into our program, please state your intent in your application.
