The Theatre Directing programme of Trinity College Dublin is the first entirely practiced-based Masters programme of its kind in Ireland. It was introduced following extensive consultation with the Irish theatre community and is a direct response to the stated needs of the industry and of talented emerging artists.

Course Description

The innovative  Theatre Directing programme of Trinity College Dublin is taught in the newly established The Lir – National Academy of Dramatic Art at Trinity College which is the professional training institution of the School of Creative Arts.

Course Details

Full-time and part-time students will take three concurrent modules in the first two terms. The final module (Module 5) will be taught in the third term and subsequent summer months (for full-time students) or in the second year of the course (for part-time students) and will culminate with a professional production staged in one of The Lir’s performance studios. Term Three will be supplemented by an ongoing series of master classes from professional directors and theatre makers.

General requirements

  • Candidates should have a good honours degree of upper second class or above, or equivalent qualification in a cognate area.
  • A portfolio of work including a critical assessment of recently directed work is an essential part of the application process.
  • Proven natural ability and prior experience as demonstrated at interview will also be considered.
  • Please note that all applicants must include a financial plan in their personal statement which indicates clearly how they intend to finance themselves if successful in gaining a place on this course
