Overview

The Quantum, Light, Materials, and Nano Sciences Master’s program aims to provide students with comprehensive training in quantum and nano sciences within three distinct paths.

Light and Dilute Matter (path 1)

This path is for students interested in quantum technologies, quantum optics, atomic and molecular physics, light-matter interactions, and lasers.

Condensed Matter, Materials, and Interfaces (path 2)

This path addresses the electronic and structural properties of solid-state matter, and its interfaces with dilute matter, nanotechnologies, and materials chemistry.

Nanodevices and Technologies (path 3)

This path focuses on the fundamental and technological aspects of physical objects at the nanoscale.

The Master’s program curriculum is supported by the laboratories of Institut Polytechnique de Paris and University Paris-Saclay dedicated to all the aspects of covered by the various paths. The program comprises courses, lab work, and an internship that can be completed at one of the top laboratories of the partner institutions.

The first year dedicated to the fundamentals in Physics is divided into four majors:

Major HEP: High Energy Physics Major LOM: Laser, Optics, Light-Matter Interactions Major CMP: Condensed Matter Physics Major QT: Quantum Technologies

Students interested early on by research are advised to apply for a PhD Track in this field (combined Master and PhD). It enables a personalized master program, early immersion in research labs and a progressive development of the thesis studies.

Career:

Students who graduate from this Master are equipped to:

  • Pursue a PhD (75% of students)
  • Build a career in Research and Development in industry e.g. laser development, optical instrument design, image processing, security, microelectronics, telecommunications, optical materials, large instruments or optoelectronic components and systems

Programme Structure

Objectives

  • Acquire solid knowledge in the major fields of quantum physics, photons, atoms and molecules, condensed matter and materials, light-matter interaction and the properties of nanodevices.
  • Learn about fundamental theoretical and experimental aspects, as well as technological applications.
  • Build a strong foundation to follow more specific elective courses (Jan-Feb) for a major in light and matter, condensed matter or nanotechnologies.
  • Gain research experience through an a mandatory 4-month internship in a top laboratory of the Plateau de Saclay where many renowned research centers are located close to the Institute.
