Overview

The Spanish graduate program at Portland State University offers an exciting and rigorous education in research, writing, and teaching that prepares you to pursue doctoral studies, teach, or succeed in another career.PSU's faculty hold a broad-range of expertise and experience and will provide you with mentoring that acts as a guide throughout your time in the program.

Our program offers relevant electives on a breadth of topics, like literature in the Franco era, dialectology, indigeneity in film, cognitive science and early modern literature, Latin American colonial and decolonial studies, and underground spaces in Mexican visual and literary culture.

What can you do 

  • Most of our alumni have pursued careers as Spanish teachers in K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities, or have gone on to work with organizations that require fluency in Spanish.
  • Other recent graduates have continued on to doctoral programs. General requirements

  • Admission eligibility is based on receipt of a baccalaureate degree equivalent to a United States four-year bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized as an institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education in the relevant country or be regionally accredited within the U.S. prior to matriculating into a graduate program.
  • To be considered for regular admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or the equivalent (on the U.S. 4.0 scale). Applicants who have earned 9 or more letter-graded graduate credits must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent; this graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA.
