Overview
The breadth of research in the Institute of Integrative Biology allows bespoke pathways across all of many research interests. Research in the Institute spans the complete range of biological scales from genes and genetic regulation through proteins, post-translational modification and cellular function to whole organisms, populations and ecosystems. We use state-of-the-art “omics” technologies to generate large data-sets both within and across these scales. We also develop new mathematical and computational models to make sure we can fully exploit these data.
This Advanced Biological Sciences programme from University of Liverpool is designed for those who want to move on to a career in science, whether in academic research, industry or areas of biomedicine research. The programme consists of a 120 credit research project, during which you will work alongside PhD students and full-time researchers as a member of one of our research groups.
Career prospects
Past graduates of the School of Life Sciences have continued their academic careers as research assistants or pursued further study leading to a PhD. Graduates have also developed careers in conservation or qualified to immediately go into industries. There is a demand currently for graduates with specialisations in science or computing to enter the teaching profession. Commercial sectors such as the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agriculture industries will be possible employers of graduates, especially with the anticipated increases in the use of next-generation sequencing and the corresponding data analysis that will be required.

General requirements
MRes pathways have a greater research element than MSc programmes for students who wish to progress to a career in research and as such a good first degree (2:1 Hons or equivalent) in a relevant Biological Sciences subject is required. The normal expectation is that students who have completed an MRes will progress to a PhD degree.
