About

Max Planck School of Photonics (MPSP) is an interdisciplinary graduate school, located across Germany. It coordinates integrated Ph.D. program of the photonics education for excellent graduates/doctoral candidates from all over the world. Candidates conduct their program at one of the preferred network partners, highly ranked German universities or one of the most renowned research institutions. 

Overview

The MPSP offers a program structured in two phases. The first phase, study phase to obtain a photonics master’s degree from one of three teaching universities in Erlangen, Jena or Karlsruhe. In the second phase, the subsequent research phase and the research work are conducted under the supervision of one  of our Fellows of the MPSP. Apart from an excellent network, the MPSP offers generous scholarships and a supporting curriculum to foster interactions between the different photonics disciplines, to strengthen the research network and to advance personal and professional skills.

Programme Structure

For Study Phase, offered study programs:

­ M.Sc. Advanced Optical Technologies - MAOT program in Erlangen-Nuremberg

­ M.Sc. Photonics - ASP program in Jena

­ M.Sc. Optics and Photonics - KSOP program in Karlsruhe

  • Workshops on scientific techniques and personal development 
  • Talks and workshops by Fellows and guest researchers
  • Master's thesis in cooperation with a Max Planck Fellow at the home university or one of the partner institutes

General requirements

  • ·         Bachelor and/or Master of Science/ Engineering/ Technology with significant exposure to physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, photonics or a related subject. If you have not yet finished your degree, you may apply likewise with a preliminary official transcript (university's certified statement of your academic record).
  • ·         At least two referees (academic sources) who can attest to your academic, professional, and/or research abilities in the context of your interest in pursuing a graduate degree.
  • ·         TOEFL, or an equivalent English test (minimum points/grades): TOEFL PBT (550), TOEFL CBT (215), TOEFL IBT (85), IELTS (6.5).

MPSP offers many scholarships and supporting curriculums to foster interactions between different photonics disciplines, to strengthen research network and to advance personal and professional skills.

Living costs for Erlangen

730 - 1100 EUR /month
Living costs

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.

Funding

During the study phase of the program, students receive generous stipends from the Max Planck School of Photonics.
