
Overview
The Master’s Degree Programme in Information and Communication Technology at the University of Turku provides versatile and high-quality ICT education in selected fields of ICT, with an established reputation in innovative interdisciplinary and international education.
The Cyber Security specialisation track will give you profound and substantial education and expertise in the field of security and technology for networked systems. The focus is on researching cybersecurity technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future. The technological topics covered include security of smart environments, system and network security, the security of communication systems and applications, and designing secure systems.
You will explore both technological and theoretical scientific advances in the field and apply them to practice. After graduating, you will have a strong technological, theoretical and practical understanding in cybersecurity. With these new knowledge and skills, you will be able to proceed to build a successful career in securing the information and communication technology industry.
The Cyber Security specialisation track is a member of the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) Digital Master School in Cyber Security. The programme also has a EUR-ACE® accreditation.

Career in research
Master's degree (Technology) provides eligibility for scientific postgraduate degree studies. Postgraduate degrees are doctoral and licentiate degrees. Degrees can be completed within the University of Turku Graduate School UTUGS and Doctoral Programmes.
Programme Structure
The scope of the Master of Science (Technology) degree is 120 ECTS credit points, and the degree is divided into the following modules for the Cyber Security track:
- Joint advanced studies of the ICT degree program, 20 ECTS credits;
- Studies in Communication and Cyber Security Engineering, 20 credits;
- Advanced studies in Communication and Cyber Security Engineering, 10 credits;
- Master’s thesis, 30 credits;
- Thematic module or minor subject, 20-25 credits;
- Elective studies, 15-20 credits.

General requirements
You are an eligible applicant for master’s level studies if:
- you have a nationally recognised first cycle degree – normally a Bachelor’s degree – from an accredited institution of higher education,
- your degree corresponds to at least 180 ECTS (European credits) or to three years of full-time study,
- your degree is in a relevant field for the Master’s degree programme that you’re applying to.
For the Cyber Security specialisation track, the relevant fields are:
- communication and network systems,
- software engineering,
- computer science,
- computer technology,
- information technology,
- other relevant fields of studies where sufficient knowledge of computer network technology, programming, and mathematics is achieved.
