The 30-credit Master of Art Education from George Mason University is designed for individuals with BFA or equivalent degrees whose passion for the visual arts, as well as teaching children and youth, is based on a solid background of skills, knowledge, and experience.

At George Mason University, the Art Education Program is offered at the graduate level and leads to a graduate degree: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education.

The MAT Art Education program offers student’s unique opportunities for enriching teaching and learning experiences.  We hold annual events such as the Art Supervisors Roundtable, a panel discussion on hiring processes, and the Real Art of Teaching, where graduate alumni return to Mason to share their accounts of the real-world art classroom.

The program invites national and regional guest speakers who offer current pedagogical and research skills as well as current best practices. There is the possibility to get involved with the NAEA Student Chapter to help organize community outreach events, guest artist/teacher workshops and excursions to area museums. The program offers many teaching opportunities in the Saturday and Summer Art programs in Collaboration with the Potomac Art Academy as well as Lorton Workhouse Summer Art’s Camp.

Career options:

While there is no specific art education concentration at the undergraduate level, Mason’s BFA program provides the solid grounding in visual arts practice and knowledge that is vital to the development of a well-qualified art teacher. You can choose any of the School of Art’s undergraduate concentrations and successfully prepare yourself to teach art.

It is important to include a variety of studio disciplines in your undergraduate curriculum, so be sure to choose your electives and breadth/experience classes carefully to take a variety of 2D and 3D media as well as art history and critical theory.
