Overview

The Master Programme in Telecommunications and Informatics Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (previous called Master in Communications Networks Engineering, MERC) combines both Electrotechnical/Telecommunications and Computer Science Engineering.  In addition to a solid theoretical approach, the experimental component is of fundamental relevance, in line with the long and well established tradition of IST emphasis on "learn by doing".

Objectives

The Master Programme in Telecommunications and Informatics (METI) is aimed at graduating professionals in the area of Information and Communication Technologies, who should be able to effectively address the new challenges that emerge from the convergence of Information Technologies and Telecommunications.

The holders of a METI will hold solid knowledge in these two engineering field thanks to the use of innovative teaching methods and to the interaction with the surrounding technological milieu, promoted by Taguspark, the largest Portuguese Science and Technology Park.Therefore, METI engineers are particularly skilled to deal with complex (fixed or mobile) communications networks, in the context of communications infrastructures, service development and/or applications.

Employment

  • An engineer in Telecommunications and Informatics is fit to perform a wide range of activities for different types of employers. Namely:
  • Studies and Development Engineer. Potential employers: service provider, telecommunications companies, software houses, and the communications network industry;
  • Architect in Communication Networks. Potential employers: telecommunications companies and large organizations, such banks, insurance companies, public administration and large industries;
  • Communications Networks Manager. Potential employers: Telecommunications companies and large organizations, such banks, insurance companies, public administration and large industries;
  • Technical Consultant in Communications Networks. These engineers can be free-lancers or work for a consulting company;
  • Technical and Commercial Engineer. Potential employers: any type of company providing services to clients in the area of communications networks;
  • Product Manager / Marketing. Potential employers: service providers and software or communications networks industry;
  • Researcher. Potential employers: R&D Institutes or R&D Departments at large corporations;
  • Entrepreneur. The holder of an MSc may set up his/her own company benefiting form the Taguspark environment, developing innovative products/services in the area of communication networks.

You may apply for a Master’s or an integrated master’s (2nd study cycle) under the following conditions:

  • If you have completed an undergraduate or an integrated masters (1st study cycle) at Instituto Superior Técnico, even though with no scientific consistency with the course of the 2nd study cycle that you wish to apply to;
  • Hold an undergraduate degree (1st study cycle) in the field of Science and Technology (except in the case of the 2nd study cycle in Architecture which requires a 1st study cycle programme in Architecture);
  • Hold either an academic, scientific or professional curriculum verifying the capability to complete the master’s programme you are applying to.
