Autonomous systems are entering our working, urban, and domestic environments. Imagine fleets of smart robots that collaborate in manufacturing facilities, advanced warehouse logistics solutions such as the Amazon warehouses, crew-less cargo ships, smart grids, or interconnected smart home appliances. Those are just a few examples of what we call autonomous systems.
Study programme focus
The MSc programme in Autonomous Systems from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has been developed to build both mathematical and theoretical understanding, as well as practical experience of students, applicable to Industry 4.0, robotics, and autonomous software agents, among other application areas.
Focus is on systematic problem solving and synthesis, and you will acquire specialized knowledge in the area. More specifically, the study programme will provide you with sound hands-on experience through laboratory work and the application of IT-based tools.
You should be aware that your choice of courses in your individual study plan offers a high degree of flexibility. Therefore, you have every opportunity to design your own study programme and career by choosing from the wide range of courses offered at DTU. You are responsible for ensuring consistency when designing your study plan.
Career opportunities
The MSc in Autonomous Systems offers extensive career opportunities. You can be employed with all types of companies—from large multinational groups to small businesses with few employees. You can also pursue an international career, either through a Danish company or directly with a company abroad. Furthermore, you can become self-employed and start your own business within the vibrant fields of AI and robotics.
- Pursue a PhD
Once you have an MSc in Engineering, you might get the opportunity to continue your studies and apply for admission to the three-year PhD programme, which - at DTU- is a research-based programme ranking among the best in the world. You can do either a regular PhD or an industrial PhD, the latter with concurrent employment in a company.

General requirements
- Applicants to DTU’s MSc Eng programme in Autonomous Systems must have completed a BSc in Electrical or Computer Engineering or another relevant course of study. Applicants should possess good qualifications in basic mathematics and physics as well as in programming. It is also important to have experience with theoretical and experimental work.
- Other applicants must be able to document that they possess corresponding qualifications and will be assessed individually.
- The specific academic requirements for the MSc courses can be found in DTU’s course database and it is the individual student’s responsibility to ensure that these requirements are met.
