Key facts
The aim of the MA degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is to offer advanced professional training at the postgraduate level in the fields of earth, atmospheric, hydro-environmental, global change and other environmental Sciences (e.g. disaster risk reduction, environmental management, environmental governance etc), as well as studies concerned with human environments (urban, rural, social), and to promote inter-disciplinary exchange between various arts and science disciplines.
School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies
The School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies is one of the most productive research units at Wits. Staff members contribute regularly to local and international publications and are members of the editorial boards of many prestigious journals.
The School has an excellent reputation both locally and internationally as one of the leaders in African scholarship on issues such as sustainability, climate change, urban social and environmental justice, tourism and development.
We also lead in rock art studies, Paleoarchaeology, the Stone Age, pre-colonial farming and herding societies and the formation of modern cultural identities in the last five hundred years.
We offer undergraduate programmes in the disciplines of Geography and Archaeology and postgraduate degrees in Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Studies, Archaeology, Rock Art studies and Palaeoarchaeology.
