Molecular Medicine students at Nazarbayev University are exposed and accompanied throughout the entire MMM in a highly integrated research-based teaching and learning course-based process, both theoretical and hands on, with a final semester totally dedicated to laboratory research. Ultimately, MMM students are guided towards a research mindset to mature as junior scientists and Molecular Medicine experts.
The Master in Molecular Medicine (MMM) at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine (NUSOM) is a two year full time taught program (120 ECTS credits) designed to give students marketable knowledge and skills in biomedicine. The program is suitable for clinical or basic science graduates who want to advance their knowledge and research skills in the field of molecular medicine. English language is used throughout the program. On successful completion of the program students will be able to continue their education at the doctoral level, enter academic medicine or pursue a career in industry, diagnostic service or a related discipline.
This program is also suitable for clinicians interested in a clinical academic career. The field of molecular medicine is concerned with the understanding of disease at the molecular level, molecular research techniques and the development of molecular interventions to prevent and treat disease. Core subjects cover the Molecular Basis of Disease and include Cancer Biomarkers and Molecular Diagnostics, Recombinant Drugs and Natural Medicine.
Courses are taught by subject specialists and consist of lectures, problem and team based learning sessions and hands on experimental procedures. Research is fully integrated into the teaching. In the second year, students carry out a research project and employ knowledge gained from the taught courses. It is intended that the methods taught in the course will be applied to the investigation of specific questions of medical interest.
This research experience will augment the student’s research, data analysis, scientific writing and presentation skills to the standards required for a career in academia or industry. Assessment are carried out through a variety of different methods including: course assignments, written exams, presentations, and a research project followed by a thesis and a viva voce exam.
The MMM is unique because currently there is no other Master in Molecular Medicine program in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. NUSOM provides a high quality education embedded in a research environment and prepares students to drive change in their professional career. This program represents a window of opportunity for the participating students as well as for Kazakhstan’s growth and development in biomedicine.
