Study programme profile and description

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a rapidly advancing field with many interdisciplinary scientific and technical challenges that are being addressed globally. This Study is organised and tested within the H2020 project ENOS to prepare a new generation of young people who want to work on these topics. The course will present an overview of the state-of-the-art of CCS operations and research; it will focus on the technical and scientific considerations for CO2 injection and safety monitoring, the exploration of critical processes in laboratory studies, and numerical modelling, and conclusively to sound and reliable storage capacity estimates including the project economics and planning of mitigations measures in the case that regulatory requirements are not fully met.

The CO2 Geological Storage programme of the Sapienza University of Rome will cover all aspects of the geological storage of CO2 so that the students can both understand the work of all specialists who will be involved in CCS projects such as reservoir engineers, geologists, geophysicists, geochemical modelers, economists, regulators, etc.

Based on their previous geoscientific knowledge from graduate level, after finishing this study (postgraduate specialist level) the participants will be able to further develop their own field of specialization and independently conduct a work as a part of the team preparing the CO2 geological storage project. In addition, proficiency in the integrated methodology for exploration of the deep subsurface means furthering the knowledge of geoscience professionals in general, allowing them to use the new competencies in studies for other purposes – e.g. the geothermal resources, deep aquifers in general, energy storage etc.
