
Overview
The students in the Master in Applied Gerontology at Universidade de Aveiro may have different backgrounds: some will have a degree in gerontology, aiming to deep their studies in the same area; while others have degrees in diverse areas (such as: nursing, psychology, social work, education) and want to procced in the field of gerontology.
Employment is usually in:
- services supporting old persons (such as, day care)
- services that aim to promote active ageing
- and community services that support the population in general.
This programme aims to:
- Apply knowledge to solve challenges or constraints associated to the current trends of demographic ageing;
- Develop and apply knowledge in professional practice and research in Gerontology;
- Update and extend professional skills acquired in pre-graduation within the context of Gerontology;
- Develop knowledge and skills to facilitate interdisciplinary team work and institutional partnerships;
- Develop knowledge and skills to implement interventions aiming to promote active ageing from a life course perspective and, particularly, in advanced age;
- Develop communication and applied skills of research findings;
- Extend and develop skills for autonomous learning.

- Licenciatura level degree, or legal equivalent in Gerontology, Behaviour and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Education Sciences, Sports Sciences and related areas
- Foreign higher education degree in Gerontology, Behaviour and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Education Sciences, Sports Sciences and related areas awarded on completion of a 1st cycle study programme organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this process.
- Foreign higher education degree in Gerontology, Behaviour and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Education Sciences, Sports Sciences and related areas recognised as satisfying the objectives of the licenciatura degree by the scientifically and statutorily competent body.
