Overview
Our two concentrations (teaching adults or teaching K-12) are designed to prepare you to work locally or internationally with the audience of learners of your choice. Earn your master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and create new possibilities for your students.
With a master's degree in TESOL from Hamline University, you will:
- Understand the relationship between language and culture and its implications for learning and society.
- Gain foundational knowledge in language systems and how they relate to instruction.
- Develop 21st-century skills in teaching and assessment.
- Develop the expertise to effectively motivate English language learners in a variety of settings.
- Establish the research skills you need to be an informed, active, and collaborative practitioner.

General requirements
- Online application (no fee for US residents).
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work. If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must submit both the original and an official or a certified course by course English translation.
- If you have a GPA of 2.5-2.9, you may still be considered for admission.
- A two-page essay explaining why you have decided to pursue a MA-TESOL and how the program will support your professional goals
- Two letters of recommendation written by people unrelated to you familiar with your academic and/or professional history who can accurately assess your potential for successful graduate study.
- Documentation of foreign language study (students must have at least two years of high school or one year of college foreign language, or the equivalent).
