The aim of the Master of Faith-based Leadership and Management at University of Otago is to enhance leadership and management in faith-based organisations, through the incorporation of current scholarship in both Theology and Business Administration.

Overview

The Master of Faith-based Leadership and Management at University of Otago is designed to enhance a graduate's leadership and management of faith-based organisations and to enable advanced reflection and research on the practice of leadership and management.

The admission requirement is a degree or equivalent three-year qualification in any subject area with satisfactory grades. In cases where the student’s prior qualifications do not include theological study, he or she may be required to undertake one or more 300-level papers in theology in order to satisfy the prerequisites for specific 400-level papers in BIBS and/or CHTH. 

All the Theology papers offered for this qualification will be taught by distance; with a few papers taught both on campus and by distance in the same semester. The MBA papers are taught both on campus and by distance. The Research Project can be done either on campus or by distance.

The study of Faith-Based Leadership and Management is aimed at enhancing leadership and management in faith-based organisations through the incorporation of current scholarship in both Theology and Business Administration.

Faith-Based Leadership and Management are offered by Distance Learning, by way of the University’s videoconference network.

Studying Faith-Based Leadership and Management by Distance Learning is also an option for people who live in Dunedin; it is particularly useful for those whose work commitments prevent them from attending lectures during the day.

Programme Structure

  • A candidate who has been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Faith-based Leadership and Management may be exempted from those papers in the programme for the degree which have been previously passed for the diploma.
  • With prior approval, relevant postgraduate papers worth up to the equivalent of 40 points may be credited from another department or from another university or tertiary institution.

  • Entrance requirements for postgraduate study vary by programme with most requiring a minimum bachelor-level qualification in the same field, and some having additional requirements such as relevant work experience and/or professional registration in New Zealand. 
  • A postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma can usually be taken at any time after the completion of your bachelor's degree.
  • If you hold an honours degree or postgraduate diploma you may be able to eligible for master’s study by thesis only. In some cases if you hold a bachelor’s degree you may apply for a coursework master’s degree or for master’s study by coursework and thesis.

Funding

The University offers a number of generous masters’ awards and doctoral scholarships (for PhD and other doctoral-level study). These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, research ability (where applicable) and suitability within the department. No interview is required. Students already receiving a full scholarship covering tuition fees and living costs are not usually eligible.
