Overview

Staffordshire University enjoy very strong links with the journalism industry, and our undergraduate courses are accredited by the key industry bodies in journalism and public relations. Our staff have a wide range of industry expertise including in sports journalism and PR, politics, media law, new media and photojournalism.Our researchers collaborate with a number of scholars nationally and internationally and operate on a cross-disciplinary basis. The team has particular research strengths in new digital media, social media, politics and political communication, photojournalism and the history and sociology of journalism.We would particularly welcome PhD applications from students interested in research into these topics, from any area of journalism (for example, sports, PR, music, games, news).MPhil/PhD Journalism award may be studied in full-time, distance learning or part-time mode, and we consider applications for part-time studies outside the UK on a case-by-case basis. We strongly advise you to contact us for an informal discussion about your proposed research before you make a formal application. We will be happy to discuss with you what is involved in PhD level study and how to develop a PhD research proposal.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree, or a Masters degree in a relevant subject area. If English is not your first language, you must achieve IELTS 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each element.
