This Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management (SINReM) programme at EIT RawMaterials Academy is designed for the next generation of specialists who will create sustainable solutions in the raw materials field.

This MSc is brought to you by three partners universities that combine their expertise and research: Uppsala University, Ghent University and TU Bergakademie Freiberg. 

These courses include modules on innovation management, entrepreneurship and business plan development that prepare the students for their master thesis research and for the start of a future start-up or spin-off.

T-shaped professionals that make the value chain more sustainable

SINReM graduates are especially attractive for employers because the programme establishes very close, effective and clear links between education, research and innovation, i.e. the three sides of the knowledge triangle. 

This is reflected in the significant study time dedicated to innovation management and entrepreneurship skills and to project work aimed at stimulating creative and multidisciplinary thinking with active involvement of the non-academic partners in the student supervision.

From global challenges to economic opportunities

The limited availability of raw materials, together with worldwide phenomena such as base metal and high-tech metal supply risks, fossil fuel depletion and climate change urges us to radically adapt to a sustainable management of natural resources. This challenge can be transformed into an economic opportunity. 

The re-invigoration of the mining industry in a sustainable way and the stimulation of the recycling industry are good examples of how the move to sustainable management are providing such opportunities. This requires a shift in economic and business models but also in the education and training of the professionals who will be developing these new models. 

There is a clearly identified need for professionals that have a holistic overview on resource management and up-to-date processing technologies. Individuals that are familiar with sustainability concepts and possess an innovative mind-set to boost the economic importance of this sector. 

SINReM delivers such “T-shaped professionals” who have a broad overview on the entire value chain with basic expertise and insight in all of its aspects, with a specialised expertise in one particular field. 

These proffesionals will focus on developing novel technology, engineering and re-inventing materials cycles and the value chain to make them more sustainable and economically superior in order to strengthen European industry. Large industrial players active in this field, as well as small and medium enterprises have determinedly expressed the need for professionals with such skills, knowledge and abilities.


Triple diploma master programme.

The SINReM programme has been awarded the EIT Label, a unique seal of quality in innovation and entrepreneurship education. The EIT Label is awarded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a body of the European Union.

  • A bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS) in engineering or science including 15 ECTS in mathematics and/or physics and 10 ECTS in chemistry, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university or engineering college.

Living costs

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.


For students enrolling in September 2021, EIT Label scholarships from EIT RawMaterials of €13,500 per eligible student are available. European EIT RawMaterials scholarship holders receive a partial tuition fee waiver down to €2,000 per year. Additionally, a number of Erasmus Mundus full scholarships of up to €49,000 for the two years are available, covering full tuition fees and living expenses.
