The Teaching programme delivered by University of South Carolina is a 30-hour program designed for practicing teachers who have earned an initial teaching certificate or its equivalent and who wish to enhance their professional teaching practice or are seeking career advancement. The program includes a core of courses and experiences followed by continued study addressing an area of specialization.

M.Ed. in Teaching – Literacy and Reading

In this program, educators will explore research-based practices and inquiry-learning designed to meet the literacy needs of today's diverse learners in grades preK-12. This specialization also meets course requirements for the South Carolina Read to Succeed Literacy Teacher or Literacy Requirement Endorsement.

M.Ed. in Teaching – Project Based Learning

In this program, you will examine teaching methodology designed to enable preK-12 students to gain knowledge and skills while working for extended periods of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. This specialization also meets course requirements for the South Carolina Project Based Learning endorsement.

M.Ed. in Teaching – Multicultural Contexts in Education

This program covers instructional strategies and classroom environments that can help students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to thrive within a democratic society.

For programs for the advanced preparation of teachers, candidates meet ISTE standards. For doctoral programs, candidates are prepared to publish and present at conferences.
  • Mastery of Relevant Theory and Research. Advanced program candidates demonstrate in-depth, critical knowledge of the theory and research relevant to the professional role(s) and focus area(s) emphasized in the program.
  • Skills in Identifying and Using Professional Resources. Advanced program candidates demonstrate a high level of skill in identifying and using the human, material, and technological resources needed to perform their professional roles and to keep abreast of the field’s changing knowledge base.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two letters of recommendation that focus on your potential for success in a graduate program.
  • Current resume or vita.
  • Letter of Intent to pursue graduate study that addresses the dispositions (stewardship, intellectual spirit, integrity, and justice) of the USC College of Education Conceptual Framework in the context of the applicant's teaching.
  • Three years of experience in an education setting OR 3.0 GPA or higher in last degree earned OR top 50th percentile score on the GRE Verbal and GRE Quantitative (Graduate Record Exam) OR top 50th percentile score on the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) scores.
