The Lighting Design Master's programme offered by the ITMO University combines problem-based and human-oriented approaches with deep integration of state-of-the-art technologies (HCI, big data, microelectronics, new materials, smart wearables, IoT, photonics, and optics).

The Lighting Design Master's programme offered by the ITMO University attracts not only graduate students with various backgrounds but also people with extensive professional experience in architecture, interior and/or urban design, media, and engineering.

Students are taught to comprehensively interact with real-life environments and provide objective justification for their creative choices. In addition to the main curriculum, students participate in lectures, conferences, and workshops by top-tier Russian and international scientists, researchers and practitioners in lighting design and related fields such as architecture, design, lighting, and computer technologies. This allows them to enhance their knowledge and engage in networking, which is a crucial tool for modern lighting designers who strive to succeed both in Russia and abroad, working for themselves or a company.

Work placements and internships

High-achieving students have the opportunity to take part in international summer schools and internships, as well as obtain valuable international experience as part of exchange programs at partner universities: the University of Oulu (Finland), Aalborg University (Denmark), Tallinn University (Estonia), and University of Wolverhampton (the UK). In the very first days, students can receive recommendations from their lecturers that will allow them to join the department’s many industrial and art projects. All students have open access to the department’s state-of-the-art projects and laboratories. The best works will be presented at national and international competitions.

Employment prospects

This comprehensive educational experience gives students the opportunity to make their professional breakthroughs and accumulate a high-quality portfolio to seek employment at the top architecture and design bureaus, lighting companies, and interactive media studios. The Master’s program allows students to obtain extensive knowledge and skills that can be applied in their future career, be it as lighting designers, creative producers, or heads of solutions departments charged with the development of smart solutions for the improvement of lighting quality for urban spaces.
