Overview

Within the Master’s programme in Linguistics - Language Description and Comparative Linguistics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam focuses on the interaction between theory and data in the research traditions of anthropological, typological and descriptive linguistics. 

The programme’s emphasis on practical fieldwork, cultural pragmatics and anthropological perspectives makes it unique in the Netherlands. When you graduate, you will have the knowledge, skills and expertise to function as a linguistic consultant or linguistic researcher in many settings, particularly in translation, cross-cultural communication and language documentation.

In this specialisation, you will focus on developing:

  • knowledge of current developments in the fields of typological, descriptive and anthropological linguistics 
  • the ability to reflect critically on scholarly publications in these fields 
  • the skills to carry out linguistic research in fieldwork and cross-cultural linguistic consultancy settings
  • the ability to communicate the results of your research clearly and systematically to fellow linguists and to the general public 
  • the ability to write a reference grammar of an under-documented language in accordance with the international standards of descriptive and documentary linguistics

  • Admission is based on a strict selection procedure. The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application. In order to gain admission to one of our Master’s programmes, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent.
