Overview

Embedded systems work in interaction with their environment and other systems; they sense, process and communicate and even scavenge their energy from the environment. Embedded systems interact with people or work invisibly in the background.

Many embedded systems are designed to increase safety, such as the automatic anti-collision braking of a car, and some for fun, for example a camera that augments reality in an outdoor game. The Information Technology - Embedded Systems program offered by Tampere University will combine hardware and software expertise.

Career opportunities

As an expert in embedded systems, you will have a variety of career opportunities. There are numerous fascinating applications and interesting companies in the market. The global embedded systems market is worth over 200 billion USD and growing rapidly. A survey conducted in 2017 demonstrates that an embedded system product design team consists, on average, of 15 people, of which 60% are in embedded SW and 40% in HW design. The figures show that there is room for both small and large companies in the market, in both application and technology development. 

Programme Structure

  • During the studies, we view embedded systems from a very practical standpoint. The embedded systems studies combine hardware and software design by using modern methods and tools. 
  • Our research groups co-operate with businesses and work with real-life cases to develop new methods and solutions. 
  • Close collaboration with businesses also gives us an excellent opportunity to delve into trends, state-of-the-art applications and future winners in the field.
