New professions will continue to emerge in both the public and private sectors (public administration, security organisations, businesses and civil society) locally, nationally and globally. The new professions in security, safety and risk management require innovative in-depth knowledge and skills that are based on interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies. Organisations and enterprises need highly qualified professionals with a thorough understanding of security and safety management, safety engineering, risk management, governance and leadership.

Depending on their major, students graduate with the degree of the Safety Management and Engineering, Security and Safety Management programme from Tampere University . The two majors have their own admission and degree requirements. Apart from the majors, the programme mainly consists of joint courses. Students enrolled in SAFER can also choose courses across any of the faculties at Tampere University.

Programme Structure

  • The Master’s Programme in Security and Safety Management is a unique combination of technological and social scientific approaches. The insightful programme provides students with a solid understading of safety and security management, risk management, governance and leadership.
  • The studies consist of joint programme studies in Security and Safety Management, intermediate studies in Safety Management and Engineering, and elective studies in a chosen area (students pursuing a master's degree in technology are also required to complete an additional study module). 
  • All students with a previous degree from a Finnish university of applied sciences (AMK) are required to take complementary studies, which generally include courses in mathematics, physics and/or chemistry depending on the student's background.
