There is currently a divide between what we regard as 'Interior design', and what we regard as 'Interior architecture'. However there is an on-going convergence of both fields, and an opportunity exists to fuse together the most influential elements of both; the creativity, process, and design thinking of designers, with the science, knowledge, and pragmatism of architecture.
The Interior Architecture and Design programme from Heriot-Watt University Dubai aims to fuse key aspects of both fields, to prepare graduates to enter and lead an evolving design industry. Heriot-Watt University is well known as a leader in STEM education and research and as such we aim to consider and combine the role of both science and design in informing interior architecture and design. Students are educated through a variety of studio projects, specialist subjects, and cross-disciplinary contextual and theoretical courses.
The programme attracts students primarily from an art, design, and architectural background, and expects that each student develop their own project, and concepts, that test and challenge perceived norms or patterns.
The MA Interior Architecture and Design programme is industry relevant. All teaching and learning is usually delivered through collaborative working, which simulates the industry environment. The university has connections with a number of professional partners that often provide live projects.
Our graduates can look forward to working roles such as: interior designer, design researcher, a strategy consultant, material and product designers, exhibition designer and specialised designer.

For MSc entry, a good relevant Honours degree (first or second class) or equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered. Given the clear practical element of the programmes, we will also consider non-graduate candidates holding less than a good Honours degree, or its equivalent, but with compensating qualifications or experience may be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma programme. Transfer to the MSc will be possible later on if exams and course work are at MSc level.
