The Reading and Literacy program of The University of Texas at San Antonio is designed to provide theory, research, knowledge, and field experiences for students who plan to teach reading and writing. 

Overview

Basic Degree Information/Description

Reading is presented as a linguistic, cognitive, and socio-cultural process in relation to other language arts processes such as listening and speaking, with particular emphasis on writing and the writing process. Students in the Reading and Literacy program of The University of Texas at San Antonio select one of two program emphases: instruction or research. The instruction emphasis is designed for teachers and can lead to completion of the requirements for certification as a reading specialist. The research emphasis is designed for students who want to pursue research in reading and writing; students in this emphasis normally pursue the thesis option.

  • Bachelor's degree with 18 credit hours in field of study or in another appropriate field of study
  • Applicants without adequate preparation in education may be required to complete preparatory courses as a condition of admission
  • A completed a Graduate School application
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
  • Individuals who do not meet the University-wide graduate admission GPA may be required to submit GRE scores. General GRE, may not be older than five years
  • English language proficiency test scores
