About

The Computational Linguistics program of the University of Colorado at Boulder is a unique interdisciplinary degree that provides a solid foundation in both computer science and linguistics graduate coursework as well as several courses focused on data-driven linguistics, computational linguistics and information processing.

Overview

The training is aimed at preparing students for careers in areas such as predictive text messaging, search engines, question-answering, interactive virtual agents and machine translation.

Distance Education Option

Students can take individual courses toward a master's degree or graduate certificate through distance education (online). Due to the hands-on learning experience, some courses must be taken on campus. This is a hybrid program.

Learning Outcomes

The Computational Linguistics program of the University of Colorado at Boulder is intended to:

  • Provide a solid foundation in computer science, data-driven linguistics and natural language processing graduate coursework. 
  • Educate graduates to be specialists in the application of computers to the processing of natural languages, such as English, Chinese, Arabic and Urdu.
  • Prepare students for jobs in the field of computational linguistics, also known as text analytics, natural language processing and informatics, a field critical to the success of mainstream global businesses who compete for employees qualified to address these needs.

General requirements

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent in computer science, linguistics, math or science from an accredited college or university.
  • Have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • Programming experience equivalent to a CS undergraduate level.
  • GRE scores are required for all applicants.
  • International applicants whose post-secondary education was not in English need to provide a TOEFL score of 83 (IBT) or higher or an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher.
  • Provide 3 letters of recommendation.
  • 3 semesters of mathematics at the upper division level of calculus or above.
  • Introductory Linguistics course and upper division statistics & probability course
  • Provide a personal statement of purpose.
  • 4 semesters or more of computer science courses beyond the introductory level, including Data Structures, Programming Languages and Algorithms.
  • One or more linguistics course, such as morphology/syntax, semantics, or formal semantics
