The Master of Business Research from University of Newcastle is designed for talented professionals from all sectors, including academics and professionals in Higher Education, interested in pursuing a professional doctorate or a PhD who have no prior experience in conducting academic research.


The Master of Business Research is a pathway to the Doctor of Business Administration. Successful completion of the Master of Business Research may also be recognised as a pathway to a PhD at the University of Newcastle or other Universities.

To be considered for admission to the Master of Business Research program, applicants must provide q written proposal outlining their intended area of research and a preliminary plan for undertaking the research.

On successful completion of the program students will have:

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

Entry into the Master of Business Research is available to students who have:

  • an approved AQF level 9 Masters (coursework or research) degree or equivalent with minimum GPA of 5.25 plus a minimum of five years professional experience in a related field of work;

Additional Requirements

  • a written research proposal to be submitted with application;
  • English proficiency requirement of 6.5 IELTS or equivalent as per University policy;

The following may be required:

  • A supervised assessment of comprehension and writing skills, if deemed necessary by the Faculty; and
  • possible interview, if deemed necessary by the Faculty.

Any exceptions to these criteria will require Pro Vice-Chancellor approval.
