The MA in Applied Linguistics from ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences opens the door to a variety of professions in the field of multilingual communication. We offer three specialisations within the MA programme: Professional Translation, Conference Interpreting and Organisational Communication. 

Overview

The Master’s in Applied Linguistics from the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences is designed to follow on from a Bachelor’s degree. 

Features

By doing so, you focus on strategic tasks and the added value that humans can provide in a professional world in which artificial intelligence takes care of automatable tasks. You combine creativity and intuition with digital technologies to reach your target groups and move people.

In the core modules, which form the common basis of all specialisations, you systematically reflect on your language use as a professional – thinking outside the box. You gain access to research methods and gather experience in familiarising yourself with new fields. In doing so, you develop a critical understanding of science that benefits your professional practice.

In the specialisation modules, you gain expertise and routine that you can apply on the job. You hone your skills on the basis of current scenarios from professional life. And, under the supervision of experienced mentors, you take part in real projects and assignments in the language and communication industry.

General requirements

Successful candidates have:

  • strong written communication skills in diverse contexts, a quick understanding and good powers of concentration; they are creative in their approach to problem-solving, intellectually curious, able to deal with criticism and to cope with pressure;
  • a good general education, a thorough knowledge of economic, social, political and cultural conditions in the cultural areas of their chosen languages; 
  • an outstanding command of their native language and at least one foreign language.

You need to have a recognised Bachelor's degree or an equivalent tertiary level qualification in translation or applied languages.

  • If you have a degree in an unrelated subject area, you will be required to take an additional test of competence
  • Professional aptitude test
