About

The Executive European Studies programme of the University of Gothenburg addresses mid-career professionals across the non-profit, public, and private sectors, who want to expand their analytical capacity and network. You will sharpen your critical and strategical ability to handle the complexities of current European challenges.

Overview

About

Europe is facing challenges, both now and in the future. What happens to European cohesion and democratic values when prosperity gaps increase, as well as political conflict over migration issues? Does Europe continue to prioritize being globally competitive, or does it become a pioneer in sustainable development? And how do conflicts at the borders of Europe, and the dependence on oil and gas, give rise to new security risks? Our way of meeting these challenges is through research and education, but we also recognize a need for collaboration between policy-makers, the public, and universities. To this end, the Executive European Studies programme of the University of Gothenburg accepts a limited group of professionally active individuals in the area of European affairs to work together to address important European issues and to bring their new knowledge back to society.

A multidisciplinary programme

The studies are interdisciplinary and based on literature, perspectives, and lecturers from various academic disciplines in social sciences, humanities, economics, and law. The programme is taught by teachers and researchers at the Centre for European Studies, a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Gothenburg. In addition to this, a council of prominent members of the field is tied to the programme.

You will have the opportunity to sharpen your ability to critically and strategically handle the complexities of current European challenges. EMAES courses present research approaches and offer practical training in research methods relevant to the field of European Studies. We have an integrated approach to teaching research methods, with the majority of the methods teaching integrated with the other courses. Thus, you can immediately apply methods to relevant material and questions as you learn them. In the second and third semesters, you can choose to focus on social or environmental electives.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Co-operation and Conflict in Europe and Research Methods
  • European market integration, and one of the semi-elective courses
  • Environment and Energy in European Integration or The European Social Dimension
  • Continuation of the semi-elective course and EU as a Global Actor
