Medical physics is an important link between medicine, physics and engineering and is a relatively recent interdisciplinary subfield of applied physics.

  • Medical physics deals with physical methods that are used in diagnostic and therapeutic processes in hospitals. Students starting the course should have a basic knowledge of medicine and a well-founded knowledge of physics.
  • Students in the course deepen their knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic processes and then learn how to develop technical equipment and processes used in medical applications. In the course the focus is primarily on medical radiation physics & imaging processes, that is, radiation therapy and radiation protection, and on magnetic resonance therapy.
  • An important part of the course is that students learn to work independently and always with a practical application in mind. For that reason professors provide students with their full support in students' academic research. In addition, the department laboratories and the equipment in the Giessen-Marburg university hospital are available to students for their training and research.
  • Master's theses and research projects are also conducted in collaboration with the university hospital. In these projects students have the opportunity to address research questions concerning the improvement of treatment methods used in medical physics.
