These programs are for persons preparing to become teachers for the first time and are seeking initial NYS certification; for persons preparing for additional NYS certification in Childhood Special Education or those interested in the Childhood Education developmental level and do not want certification.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

Other requirements

General requirements

  • BA/BS in English, Foreign Language, History, Mathematics, Social Studies, or one of the sciences
  • 30 credit hours at a grade of C or better in one of the above listed fields
  • 30 credit hours at a grade of C or better in the liberal arts and sciences
  • 6 credits of a language other than English (or the college level equivalent)
  • An introductory course in Psychology
  • Evidence of computer literacy
  • English Proficiency Test: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE), and Duolingo English Test (DET) are accepted.
  • International Student Questionnaire 
  • Copies of Personal Pages of Passport/Visas. 
  • Copies of previous I-20’s (if currently an F-1 Student)
