About

Talented students from all over Africa are selected and provided with full bursaries for this intensive structured Mathematical Sciences Master's programme at the Stellenbosch University.

Overview

Key facts

AIMS is a Pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education and research in mathematical sciences. Its mission is to enable Africa's brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa's future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. The centre in Muizenberg was founded in 2003 as a partnership project of the Universities of Stellenbosch, Cambridge (UK), Oxford (UK), Paris-Sud XI (France), Cape Town and the Western Cape.

What we offer

It shares a research chair in Mathematical and Theoretical Physical Biosciences as part of the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) with the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch University.

The Mathematical Sciences course at the Stellenbosch University provides both a broad overview of cutting-edge sciences and strong mathematical and computing research skills. The course is unique, offering students exposure to a range of topics, thereby allowing them to make an informed choice as to their future specialisation. The goal is to develop well-rounded scientists, with excellent problem-solving skills, capable of creative thinking and genuine innovation. There is a strong grounding in end-to-end skills, from problem formulation, estimation, prioritization, and generally applicable mathematical and computing methods, through to clear and concise scientific report writing. A number of modules which also make the course interesting and relevant to prospective mathematics and science teachers have been included.
