The Faculty of Military Science is based at Saldanha, on the West Coast of South Africa, where it is housed in the South African Military Academy. The institution offers education and training for members of the Department of Defence at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, such as the Security and Africa Studies (Option B) programme at the Stellenbosch University.

The Faculty, which offers the Security and Africa Studies (Option B) programme at the Stellenbosch University works closely with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to meet what the latter spells out as its needs in terms of higher education.

What we offer

The Faculty is made up of five academic schools. In two of these schools, the focus of programmes is technology-related; in two others, the focus is management-oriented. In the fifth school the focus is on security and on Africa-related studies. Our modular programmes are offered by means of three to six blocks of lectures lasting 10 working days each.

Option B: The completion of a structured self-study programme culminating in a thesis.

The programme consists of three prescribed modules, as determined by the programme co-ordinator, as well as a thesis based on an approved research proposal. The research theme for the thesis should be based on the prescribed modules. A research theme is selected in consultation between the candidate and the supervisor. The research proposal must have a definite focus on Security and Africa Studies.

A thesis (60 credits) in which the candidate must show an ability to undertake independent scientifically responsible research. The thesis must be drafted in accordance with the guidelines of the University.
