About

The MA Socio-Informatics programme at the Stellenbosch University develops research capacity in socio-Informatics by means of an independent research project under supervision, which culminates in the writing of a thesis.

Overview

Key facts

The point of departure is the phenomenon of the knowledge economy and society as it is driven by knowledge-based systems in organisations and societies. Our claim that the primary purpose of such systems is to contribute to more accountable decision making in conditions of complexity, means that our programmes distinguish themselves clearly from the standard South African ones.

What we offer

The MA Socio-Informatics programme at the Stellenbosch University focuses on the development of research capacity in the field of Socio-Informatics by means of an independent execution of a research project under supervision which leads to a thesis of 120 to 140 pages.

The programme does not involve any formal lectures or class work or assessments (other than that of the thesis itself). The student performs an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisor culminating in a 110-140 page thesis. Two examiners (internal and external to the University) each assess the thesis individually in accordance to the standards prescribed by the University and the National Qualifications Framework (level 9).
