This 36-hour degree includes 18 hours of shared core courses that focus on general theories and practices of ministry. The remaining 18 hours focus the students’ attention toward understanding the foundations and skills related to specific emphases of ministry.

The primary purpose of the M.A. in Ministry Studies is to provide training for ministers in light of a growing consensus that twenty-first century ministers need significant and intentional training to be effective in vocational ministry. This on-campus, nonresidential program utilizes a modular format that will allow working adults to complete the program with little interruption to their vocational duties. The scope of the program provides an opportunity for both clergy and lay members to complete a graduate degree in ministerial studies that will positively affect their practice of ministry. Students are prepared in the foundational theory and praxis of ministry, as well as in the social and psychological contexts of the people to whom they will minister. Interdisciplinary in nature, this program presents the foundations and skills of ministry for pastoral staff ministry (e.g. family pastors, youth pastors, lead pastors, worship pastors) and parachurch staff (e.g. non-profit organizations, discipleship associations, social service providers).

The Master of Arts in Ministry Studies offers four tracks: Leadership Studies, Practical Theological Studies, Worship Studies, and Youth and Family Studies. The 36-hour degree includes 18 hours of general ministry courses and 18 hours of courses within the student’s area of specialization. The learning experience culminates in a track-specific final project or internship.

Students who do not have an undergraduate degree in some type of religious studies (e.g. ministry, biblical, or theological studies) may be required to take additional undergraduate leveling courses. Such courses would extend the hours required to between 39 and 48 hours. The determination of required leveling courses is evaluated on the basis of an individual student’s lifetime educational experience.
