University rank #601 (QS) ,
Our Gynecology and obstetrics Program is based on the tenet that residents are highly motivated learners who thrive on the acquisition of clinical skills.  The resident has already acquired a substantial knowledge base and is capable of rapidly gaining expertise in his/her chosen area of interest.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology resident at the University of Manitoba has access to a rich variety and ample volume of clinical material. We are primarily based in two tertiary care teaching hospitals in Winnipeg.  Over 11,000 high and low risk deliveries take place between Women’s Hospital and St. Boniface General Hospital each year.  There are approximately 4000 gynecologic surgeries per year - major and minor, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic.  In addition, there are regular ambulatory clinics in general obstetrics and gynecology, as well as specialty clinics in oncology, colposcopy, fetal maternal medicine, urogynecology, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, early pregnancy assessment, genetics and family planning.

A number of the university's programs hold accreditation by provincial, Canadian and/or international professional accreditation bodies.

Programme Structure

  • Foundation Year - is designed to lay a strong foundation in the principles of medicine and surgery critical to exellence in our specialty. The elective month may be used to develop an area of personal interest such as anesthesia, pediatrics, psychiatry, urology, research, etc.
  • Formative Year - The second year of the program represents the stepest learning curve in core obstetrics and gynecology. During this intense year the resident masters the essential surgical skills of cesarean section, operative vaginal delivery, hysterectomy, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy.
  • Development Year - the resident expands and builds on the basic skills mastered in the previous year and, at the same time, initiates career plans for the future. Many residents choose to go off-site in order to gain a different perspective and/or special skills during their elective time.
