Overview

The Master’s Degree Course in Medical, Veterinary or Forensic Biotechnological Sciences from University of Perugia aims at providing high levels of competence in the planning and in the scientific and technical-productive development of the biotechnologies applied to human health, veterinary medicine or forensic activities. The course is biennial and, although it foresees the participation of the Departments of Veterinary Medicine and Law, it will be held mostly at the Department of Medicine. It will be structured in a common training path in the first year and in a differentiated one in the second year according to the chosen curriculum. 

The common training path aims at providing the scientific basis of the human body morphology and of the cellular and molecular pathogenetic mechanisms involved in major diseases. Moreover, it aims at assuring the acquisition of an advanced knowledge of the major molecular biology techniques and of their application in the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of human diseases.  During the common training path, the teaching will be delivered either through regular classes or through lab activities. 

Afterwards, disciplines aimed at the acquisition of specific knowledge in the medical field (advanced molecular diagnostics), veterinary field (animal production and breeding, veterinary pathology and diagnostics, development and use of animal models for biomedical studies) and medical-forensic field (acquisition of toxicological, medicolegal, juridical and criminological skills and knowledge of the regulatory involved in the submission of patents, spin-offs, European Community grant applications) will be foreseen depending on the chosen curriculum.

Students will be able to deepen several aspects of interest and improve specific skills through the wide offer of freely-accessible practical courses. In order to improve the professionalism of the course and to foster the contact of the students with the labour market, a stage at extra-academic specialized institutions is foreseen for everybody. The training path will be completed by the activities connected to the accomplishment of an apprenticeship and to the realization of the final test thesis. These activities can be accomplished at public or private, domestic or foreign, specialized institutions.

Employment Opportunities:

After passing a professional state examination, graduates are included in the Italian State Registry of Biologists.They may find employment in the following sectors:
  • State universities, public and private research institutes, focusing on pre-clinical research and technological development in human and veterinary medicine.
  • The Italian National Health Service and similar private services.
  • Biotechnological industries and services.
  • Pharmaceutical industries and drug surveillance.
  • Food Industry and Food transformation: research, technological development and laboratory quality controls.

To enroll in a two-year Master’s Degree course, candidates must obtain recognition of their foreign academic degrees. The procedure does not make the foreign qualification an Italian one, but can ensure admission to Second-cycle University study courses following proper evaluation by the Degree Board of Professors of the Degree Course for which the candidate is applying.
