
Overview
The curriculum includes:
- string pedagogy and literature
- professional practice
- applied lessons on primary and secondary stringed instruments)
- and core music courses, i.e. music theory, history, and research methods
- electives - chamber music, non-degree recitals, etc.
String Pedagogy students will gain critical professional practice experience working in the nationally recognized ISU String Project (large group, small group, and private lessons) as well as through teaching the MusicScores! curriculum at local Head Start preschool sites.
Illinois State University is one of four universities in the country to offer the Master of Music in Music - String Pedagogy degree.

General requirements
- Have completed an undergraduate degree in music (or the equivalent for international students) and earned a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate enrollment
- Fill out a School of Music application (included within the university application)
- Include three current letters of recommendation
- Submit a live or recorded performance audition on your primary applied instrument (suggested repertoire can be found under the music studios area for your specific instrument/voice)
- Write a statement of interest (approximately 250 words)
- Submit a video of a teaching episode (private or group)
- Interview with string faculty
